Troodos/Kykkos/ Omodos “History and scenery”
Our first stop is at the 12th Century Chrysoroyiatissa Monastery dedicated to “Our Lady of the Golden Pomegranate”.
From there we drive through pine forest towards Kykkos, one of the holiest and richest monasteries in Cyprus. It is here that the first President of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios became a young monk, and was later buried according to his wishes. Among the most important treasures of the monastery is the icon of the “Virgin Mary”, which was reputedly painted by the Apostle Luke himself. We will also be able to see many religious relics of other saints. We drive onto Pedhoulas village.
Our tour continues through the beautiful Marathassa valley with its picturesque villages and lovely scenery. We will stop at a local village where we will have free time for lunch (not included in the price).
Our final stop is at Omodos, a beautiful village located in the famous wine-producing area of Afames, in the Limassol district. We will walk through the cobbled streets to the village square which is lined with cafes and shops selling local produce. We will visit the monastery of the Holy Cross, which houses a piece of the rope used by the Romans to fasten Jesus to the cross, and see the old wine press, glass makers and other craftsmen. There will be time to have a coffee or try the unique dessert wine ‘commandaria’ and the local spirit called ‘zivania’.
